Alongside community leaders and safe water experts, we have improved access to safe, reliable drinking water by constructing and rehabilitating boreholes across communities in the Mbenje area, improving general health and reducing walking distances for safe water collection.
Since 2014, we have invested in an ongoing community-led program of drilling new boreholes and rehabilitating existing ones across villages and schools in the Mbenje area. These projects have provided thousands of people with dependable sources of safe drinking water while reducing the time and effort spent collecting water, particularly for women and children
Project at a Glance:
• Location: Mbenje Area, Nsanje District, Malawi
• Implemented: 2014–2017
• New Boreholes: 20 constructed
• Rehabilitated Boreholes: 5 restored
• Beneficiaries: Communities and schools across the Mbenje area
• Investment: Over MK 70 million
Between 2014 and 2017, 20 new boreholes were constructed serving villages including Mkuzambale, Wizasoni, Mphamba, Bulawayo, Mbenje, Tinala, Aluvera, Kacholo, and June Kampira, while also rehabilitating five older boreholes that had fallen into disrepair. Several schools also benefited from improved water access, helping create healthier learning environments for pupils and staff.
By providing reliable year-round access to clean water, these investments have reduced waterborne disease risks, eased the burden of water collection, and strengthened the resilience of rural communities. Safe water infrastructure remains one of our community partners’ most impactful and enduring investments, delivering lasting benefits for health, education, and community wellbeing.
