Protecting Communities from Seasonal Flooding While Improving Access and Transport
Seasonal flooding has long damaged roads, isolated communities, and disrupted access to markets, schools, and essential services across the Mbenje area. Working through the Area Development Committee and local communities, KCDT has invested in culverts and drainage infrastructure engineered by Agricane, that safely channel floodwaters, reduce damage to transport routes, and improve year-round connectivity. These improvements help communities remain accessible during the rainy season while strengthening long-term resilience to future flooding.
The Mwachedwa culvert was constructed by Agricane at a key flood-prone crossing where seasonal rains regularly disrupted movement and damaged roads. Together with associated drainage works, it now helps manage water flows, reduces erosion, and maintains year-round access for local communities. The culvert is particularly important for pupils traveling from across the area to Mwachedwa Primary School, having previously missed many school days when flooding made the crossing impassable during the rainy season.
